Dancer · Educator · Healing Enthusiast
My name is April Joy. I’m a student by day, dancer by always. Coming from a small province in the Philippines, I have dreams of seeing and experiencing the world and its cultures. My biggest dreams are to grow in dance, travel, and to understand all that I can about life and people. This is my personal blog covering things I do, things I love, and things I think about.
MORE ABOUT ME
I started dancing in Los Angeles when I was 7 years old and learned styles from Hula to Hip Hop. I’ve danced on American Idol and assisted with choreography for So You Think You Can Dance, Ukraine. At 22 years old, under Essence Dance Company and The Other Duck Lifestyle brand, I began organizing dance workshops, helped to coordinate dance, fashion, art, and music events, and began teaching dance internationally (Colombia, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mexico, Singapore, Philippines, Norway, China). For several years, I’ve pursued dance education and am grateful to have been a resident instructor at notable studios–Debbie Reynold’s Dance Studio, Your Neighborhood Studio, Boogiezone Utopia, IDA Hollywood, and Snowglobe Perspective.
At 29, I returned to school to finish my Bachelor’s in Psychology and Social Behavior at the University of California, Irvine. There, I interned at the Campus Assault Resources and Education office which served survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. I also worked as a Research Assistant for the Neuroplasticity And Working Memory Lab, helping to conduct studies with main interests in improving intelligence and cognition. My interests peaked in learning about the capacities of our minds and our bodies, and holistic healing.
Currently, I’m a director on Kaba Modern Legacy and a dancer on Culture Shock LA. These organizations have a collection of nearly 200 active members and use dance as a medium for positive influence in the Southern California community. I aim to continue learning and sharing positivity along the way, being a leader and a student at the same time.
I’m committed to learning to better myself, and striving to be a positive influence to those I come across.
These are my ramblings. For any entertainment or insight this gives, I am thankful!
